Amazon in Durham Region

Durham Region will soon be home to two Amazon facilities; in Ajax and Whitby.

Durham Regional Chair and CEO John Henry, remarked:

“In 2019, Durham Region issued an invitation to Amazon: remain open to discussions about future opportunities in our community. As a location shortlisted for Amazon HQ2, Durham continued to showcase its passion for innovation, rich cultural heritage, talented workforce, outstanding post-secondary options, and affordable real estate. The benefits of doing business here.

Today, Amazon announced its acceptance of this invitation. Their decision to build a one million-square-foot distribution facility with 1,000 new jobs in the Town of Ajax, and open a 354,000-square-foot facility in the Town of Whitby, with hundreds of full and part-time jobs, is a solid investment in an area known for its strength and resiliency; where innovation transforms lives."

Funding Opportunities

 

Central Counties Tourism PPE Reimbursement 

Untitled Design-Sep-29-2020-10-56-02-60-AMCentral Counties Tourism has launched a PPE Reimbursement program for private and not-for-profit businesses in the hospitality and recreation sector.

The program will provide matched funding of 50% up to a maximum of $1,000 per applicant ($2,000 total expense).

Eligible expenses include plexiglass, sanitizing stations, masks, stickers, etc., that you needed to help minimize the spread of COVID-19 by keeping your staff and guests safe.

The Career Ready Fund – Auto Incentive Program

The Career Ready Fund – Auto Incentive Program is running now.

This program is for companies in the automotive industry who hire talent (students in co-ops and internships, apprentices and new grads) before March 31, 2021.

There is a $3000-$5000 financial incentive for the hiring company. It is worth noting that companies who meet the criteria can hire for a variety of roles, such as accountants, IT, nursing, engineer, etc. As long as the employer meets the criteria as an auto-related company, the roles can be open.

Ontario Tech University, Durham College and Loyalist College are partners on this program and students hired from any of the three institutions are eligible for this funding.

4 Million Masks

On September 29, Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter and Regional Chair and CEO John Henry visited GM Canada's Canadian Mask Making room to help produce the masks that will keep frontline healthcare workers and fellow Canadians safer. GM Canada's Oshawa facility has now produced 4 Million masks for Health Canada.
